Ride the 2018 TOMR in Jens Voigt’s Breakaway!
If you don’t have a team, if you’re a junior rider, or if you’re not up for racing and just love to ride, you can still experience the entire Tour of Margaret River on the Breakaway with none other than the world’s most famous breakaway specialist, Jens Voigt. Four glorious rides are on offer: ride them all, or choose a selection that suits you.
DAY 1: THE MEDIO FONDO
The first day of the Breakaway sees you join Jens at for a 60km 747m ride through some of the most picturesque countryside in rural Western Australia. Starting and finishing at the delightfully delicious Lady Marmalade Cafe in the tiny town of Kirup and passing through the town of Donnybrook, you will roll past enchanting hobby farms, orchards and dairy farms. With energising climbs, thrilling descents and magnificent views, you will be captivated by this ride. Charley Creek Road and the Upper Capel Road are both ranked in Ride WA’s top 10 roads in Western Australia. Start time 10:30am in Kirup.
DAY 2: THE ARRIVAL
Join 700 Tour of Margaret River racers in the township of Balingup for stage 1: The Arrival. You will ride ahead of the racers in the Breakaway with Jens, as team after team is launched behind you in time trial formation to race along the Balingup-Nannup Road. Undulating, winding and scenic, this 41km 466m route is normally one of the South West’s premier tourist drives. When you arrive in Nannup, you will be greeted by cheering spectators and you can kick back in the event village, enjoy a freshly brewed coffee from Melo Velo with Jens as you watch the teams arrive. Start time 11:00am in Balingup.

DAY 3: THE KANDALEE CATAPULT
Test your climbing legs against Jens’ on the 51km 836m Kandalee Catapult. Starting an hour ahead of the race, will you reach the township of Greenbushes before the first wave of racers rounds the final corner and sprints up the straight to cross the finish line? This route takes you out of Nannup along the undulating Brockman Highway, then turns you left and upwards onto the iconic Maranup Ford Road. Once you summit Kandalee Hill, the road will catapult you towards the finish line in Greenbushes. A few sneaky moves and a well-timed sprint will give you the opportunity to forever tell the story of the day you beat Jens Voigt across the finish line! Start time 8am in Nannup.

DAY 4: THE GRAN PURSUIT
Today you may find yourself repeating Jens’ mantra, “Shut up legs!”. Leaving 90 minutes ahead of the race, you will be “the hunted” in the first ever 109km 1063m Gran Pursuit. This route starts and finishes in Nannup and features the entire length of the rollercoaster of Mowen Road. All the roads in the Gran Pursuit are characteristically Western Australian: wide, undulating and fast with long, expansive horizons and big open skies. Hold Jensie’s wheel if you can, to ensure you finish before the pursuing pelotons. Start time 8am in Nannup.
BE LICENSED TO RIDE
All Breakaway riders must either bring proof of their current ride insurance or bring proof of purchase of the Cycling Australia 3 Race Membership. For riders who participate in several CA-affiliated rides each year, we encourage the purchase of the annual Ride Membership.
For a moderate additional fee, a shuttle service is available for those who need it on day two to return to Balingup to collect a vehicle, and on day three to return riders and bikes from Greenbushes to Nannup. Simply choose this option at the point of registration.
